Newspapers

You can access Local History newspapers in several ways.

Newspapers Online

Many issues of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix (up to the 1980s) are digitized and available in full-text at the Google Newspaper Archive. The StarPhoenix has gone through some title changes, but this guide will help you find what you're looking for.

Microfilm

Historic newspapers

The StarPhoenix and its predecessors (dating back to 1902) are on microfilm.

Some pre-1900 newspapers from what was then the Northwest Territories are also available on microfilm.

Note that Local History is not open on Saturdays. If you'd like to view microfilm on a Saturday, please call ahead so we can arrange for you to view the microfilm in Fine Arts.

How to find an article on microfilm

It's best to find the date of an article beforehand, to avoid browsing through reels of film. You can find dates with the following resources:

Saskatoon Newspaper Index

Saskatchewan News Index  (U of S)

Saskatoon Obituary Index

Other Saskatchewan newspapers on microfilm

The Saskatchewan Archives Board may be able to help you as well - they have microfilm from other places in Saskatchewan.

The Archives Board has begun digitizing community newspapers which are found at Saskatchewan Historic Newspapers Online.

Clippings Binders

For decades, we have collected and indexed newspaper clippings about local people, places and events. They are in binders in the Local History room.

1. Biography clippings binders have information about people and are organized by last name.

2. Subject binders are divided by topics, including:

  • Streets
  • Parks
  • Bridges
  • Houses and subdivisions
  • Schools
  • Hotels, restaurants and numerous other businesses
  • Ethnic groups, Métis and First Nations
  • Parades, festivals and other events
  • High-profile accidents, murders and other crime
  • City of Saskatoon
  • University of Saskatchewan
  • Saskatoon Public Library

Some clippings about Saskatoon music and the armed forces can be found in the Special Newspapers and Clippings Index.

We also have print indexes to help you find articles.

Archival Newspapers

We have some special editions of early newspapers that are bound for preservation. Many of them have been indexed in the Special Newspapers and Clippings Index.

Canadian Major Dailies
