SPL Temporarily Closing All Locations
Update: SPL will remain closed until at least April 20. All new information will be added to this page as it becomes available.
With information around COVID-19 rapidly evolving, SPL has made the difficult decision to temporarily close all library locations as of Monday, March 16.
While the risk of transmission remains low in our community, the Saskatchewan Health Authority recommends social distancing and limiting gatherings at this time. As such, SPL has determined that closing public libraries is currently in the best interest of the community’s health and safety. Alongside the city and province, we will be reassessing on a daily basis and providing updates on SPL’s operations on our website and social media channels.
Holds will be temporarily suspended while the libraries are closed. Further, SPL is waiving all late fees accumulated beginning March 13 and book drops are closed, so please hold onto all library items for now as you will not be fined.
You will still be able to use SPL’s online resources during this closure.
For health and safety reasons, SPL has decided to have employees stay home while the library is closed. This will begin Tuesday, March 17 and remain in effect until further notice. Although the libraries will be closed, we will still have employees answering emails sent to [email protected] between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm from Monday to Saturday. Employees will be answering phone calls to the main branch numbers during these times. If your call goes to voicemail, please leave a message and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. We have tried to provide answers to some common questions below, so please check that section of this page before contacting us.
Employees will also be answering phone calls to Accessibility Services (306.975.7565) between 10 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday. You can also email Accessibility Services ([email protected]) and someone will get back to you.
Outreach Workers will be available by phone (306.657.8556 or 306.657.8768) 10 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday or by email at [email protected]. They are keeping updated on what community support services remain open and will still be providing referrals during this time.
While we hope to reopen the library as soon as possible, the health of patrons and employees is our focus. The situation will be reassessed on a daily basis and we will provide updates on our website and social media channels as soon as they become available.
Thank you for your patience during this time.
Questions & Answers
Q: I don't have a library card. Can I get one now to use SPL's Digital Services?
A: Yes! You can now go online to get a temporary library card number that will allow you to use the many great resources on the Digital Library section of our website. Click here and fill out the information on the page. Please note, the number you get after filling out the form will only provide limited access to resources. We will contact you via email with a full-service barcode after we process your information.
Q: Fines are showing on my account after March 13, 2020. Why?
A: As of March 16, fines will no longer accumulate on your account. We are currently working to backdate accumulated fines to March 13, so please ignore any fines showing on your account that were accumulated between March 13 and 16. Book drops are closed so please hold onto your library items until SPL reopens.
Q: What to do if my card is blocked because of fines and I can’t use digital materials?
A: We have successfully remedied this issue and anyone with a library card should now be able to access all digital resources regardless of fines and fees on their accounts. Please email [email protected] if you are still experiencing issues.
Q: My card is expired. What do I do?
A: Please email [email protected] we will renew your card for you as soon as possible.
Q: I’m having trouble with my card and I don’t know why. What do I do?
A: Please email [email protected] and outline the problem you’re having. Someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
Q: Should I return library materials I currently have out?
A: No. Book drops are closed, so please hold onto your library materials until SPL reopens. Fines will not be charged/accumulate while the libraries are closed.
Q: What will happen to my holds? Will they still be there?
A: Yes, once the libraries reopen all holds will be available to pick up at the location they’re currently held at.
Q: Can I still request and place holds?
A: No. Holds have been temporarily frozen province-wide and will provide an update when this changes. Interlibrary Loans have also been temporarily suspended.
Q: Is SPL increasing its investment in any digital library resources during this time?
A: This is something we are currently looking into but do not have an answer for yet.
Q: I haven’t been contacted about my room rental cancellation refund.
