Newspaper Clippings Binders
For decades and continuing to the present, Local History staff have collected and indexed newspaper clippings about people, places and events. They are in binders on the shelves of the Local History reading room.
1. Biography clippings binders have information about people and are organized by last name.
2. Subject binders are divided by topics including
- Houses and subdivisions
- Hotels, restaurants and numerous other businesses
- Ethnic groups, Métis and First Nations
- Parades, festivals and other events
- High-profile accidents, murders and other crime
- City of Saskatoon
- University of Saskatchewan
- Saskatoon Public Library

We also have print indexes to help you find articles.
The StarPhoenix and its predecessors back to 1902 are on microfilm. If the date is up to 25 years ago, you’ll find the film in Local History. For the most recent 25 years, visit the Fine Arts department on the second floor of Frances Morrison Central Library.
Some pre-1900 newspapers from what was then the Northwest Territories are also available on microfilm in Local History.
Note that Local History is not open on Saturdays. Call ahead if you’ll be here on a Saturday and we’ll make arrangements for you to view the microfilm in the Fine Arts department.
How to find an article on microfilm
It’s not possible to ‘Google search’ microfilm. Try to obtain the date of an article beforehand or you’ll be browsing through reels of film.

Other Saskatchewan newspapers on microfilm
The Saskatchewan Archives Board may be able to help since it has microfilm from other towns and city around the province.
The Archives Board has begun digitizing community newspapers which are found at Saskatchewan Historic Newspapers Online.
Local History has certain special editions of early newspapers that are bound for preservation. Many of them have been indexed in the Special Newspapers and Clippings Index .
Many issues of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix (up to the 1980s) are digitized and available in full-text at the Google Newspaper Archive. Since the issues appear under different newspaper headings, this guide will help locate the date you’re looking for.
This database has full-text articles from the Saskatoon StarPhoenix starting in May, 1996. You can use this site from home with your library card number.
